Geranium: The Oil That Helps Your Heart Learn to Trust Again
Geranium has a soft, green, floral smell that fills a room without asking for attention. It's the kind of scent that makes your shoulders drop a little. If your heart has felt closed off or guarded lately, geranium is the oil that gently invites it to open back up.
Geranium comes from the plant Pelargonium graveolens, and people have loved it for centuries, especially the Victorians, who grew it as a centerpiece in their homes just for the pleasure of having it around. It's known as a middle note in blending, which just means it holds a blend together and gives it some warmth. You can add a drop to your moisturiser at night, use it in shampoo or conditioner, add it to a facial steam, or diffuse it around the house. It's also lovely mixed into a carrier oil or some bath salts for a daily bath oil, a simple way to slowly get to know it and let it become part of your routine. Some people even use it as a natural bug deterrent, by either diffusing or applying with a carrier oil on the body.
Where geranium really shines is in how it makes you feel. It's often reached for when life feels like a lot, since a few drops in the diffuser can help release some of that tightly wound feeling and bring things back to calm. A gentle massage over the heart or feet is a lovely way to feel steadier after a hard day. It also works well in shared spaces, since it's known for bringing a sense of harmony when a few different energies are in one room.
Geranium's home in the body is the heart chakra, and it's often called the emotional healer for exactly that reason. It's tied to Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty, which makes sense once you notice how much geranium's work is about opening up to love, softening old hurt, and learning to trust again. If you've had a season where trust has felt hard to come by, whether with other people or the world in general, geranium is a soft place to start rebuilding that.
Geranium is also known for helping bring your masculine and feminine sides into balance, whatever that looks like for you. Geranium is an oil good for people with Libra in their birth charts, It's ruled by the planet Venus, and Friday is considered its best day to use, since that's the day tied to Venus's steady, loving energy.
There's a dreamier side to geranium too. It's said to support dream work and help you feel comfortable exploring beyond the ordinary while you sleep.
But if there's one thread that runs through everything I read and discovered about geranium while using her, it's healing. It's known for softening anger, easing grief that's been tucked away, and helping old wounds finally get some air. It encourages you to be honest with your feelings instead of pushing them down, which is never a bad thing.
One thing I loved learning is that if you're not drawn to geranium's smell, some say that's worth paying attention to, since it might be pointing you toward some trust work that's ready to happen. If the scent feels like a lot, try rubbing a drop into your feet instead, so it can still do its quiet work without being right under your nose.
At the end of the day, geranium is an invitation to open your heart back up, a little at a time. It fits right in with the kind of self love work I always come back to here, taking small steps toward trusting yourself and the people around you again. If you'd like to bring geranium into your own routine, try it in a relaxing bath once a week, or rub into the soles of your feet at bedtime and trust it to aid you on your journey of life "ing" day by day ๐
