Roller Blends
Roller Blends are such an easy way to have oils on the go and a way to try new essential oils and blends.
Essential Oil Roller Blends are roller bottles filled with a carrier oil and pure essential oils. The pure essential oils are diluted with a carrier oil for three reasons:
To make them safe to apply directly to the skin.
To make your pure essential oils go further.
So you’re not carrying around precious pure essential oils that might get left in a hot car, etc.
Most roller bottles are a 10ml size. To make a roller oil (or aroma roller - call it what you like), you decide on your essential oils and then add a carrier oil.
What Are Carrier Oils?
Carrier oils are oils like almond oil, calendula oil, evening primrose oil, fractionated coconut oil, apricot kernel oil, jojoba oil, and vitamin E oil.
Think of carrier oils as the base. Many of these come from nuts and seeds. They absorb easily into the skin and often have therapeutic properties themselves. Sometimes I like to mix carrier oils depending on the purpose of my aroma roller.
How to Make Your Roller Blend
Once you have your ingredients, pop the top off your roller bottle.
Add your essential oils first. If you’re making a blend like a Morning Intentions Roller Blend, start with the thickest oils:
Add 5 drops of Vetiver first (it’s the most viscous).
Then 7 drops of Bergamot.
Pop the roller back on, then the lid, and roll the bottle between your hands to blend the oils thoroughly. Maybe as you do this, think about your intention for the oil.
When I make roller blends for customers, I think about the oils they’ve chosen and their healing properties, or about how the blend can support them.
When you feel the oils are mixed, pop off the roller top again and fill the bottle just to the level of the bottle’s “shoulder” (or just underneath) with your carrier oil(s). Pop the roller and lid back on, then roll the bottle between your hands vigorously to mix everything well.
If you’re making a roller with just one essential oil, follow the same process: add the required drops of your essential oil, top with carrier oil, then roll between your hands.
Why I Love Roller Blends
I love making roller blends of my most precious essential oils to have on the go. I usually have five or six different rollers in my purse at all times.
I also enjoy experimenting with different blends, ones I spot on Instagram, doTerra blends using the monthly specials, or my own mixes. I create blends for different purposes and get loads of ideas from clients wanting to try something new.
Sample Roller Blend Recipes
Stress Relief Roller Blend
6 drops Lavender
4 drops Frankincense
4 drops Bergamot
One client was struggling to cope during busy days at work and home. Little things set her off, and she was getting overwhelmed. She wanted something simple to carry that could help in those moments, a quick way to calm her nerves and feel more centred.
She used this blend every morning while getting ready for work (proactively), then whenever things got too much, she’d roll it on her wrists or behind her ears. Taking a quick moment to breathe and reset her mood made a big difference.
Using essential oils before you need them tends to have a cumulative effect. Clients and I have seen great results from creating little morning and night rituals with essential oils to support everyday life and all.the.things.
Aligned Growth Roller Blend
Frankincense
Clary Sage
Wild Orange
Lavender
This is my personal go-to for mornings when there’s just too much happening—one million things to do, a million ideas popping into your head, and at the same time, feeling foggy. It’s my blend to stop, refocus, align, and carry on—or to start the day in a better state of mind.

Pre-Made Options and Skincare
DoTerra also offers a range of Touch Oils which are pre-made blends and single oils designed for topical use. The blends are proprietary formulas targeted for wellness.
I personally love their flower Touch Oils and have been trying them for my face and neck skincare. Moisturiser often doesn’t work for me in summer because I tend to sweat it off, so using a DoTerra Touch flower oil like rose, jasmine, or magnolia straight after my shower absorbs better and leaves my skin soft. I then apply BB cream once it’s absorbed a bit. Bliss!
How Roller Bottles Work on Your Skin
When you use essential oils in a roller bottle on your skin, they work two ways:
You breathe in the scent. Tiny scent molecules travel through your nose and can affect how you feel helping you feel calmer, clearer, or more uplifted.
Some of those tiny oil molecules soak into your skin. Although our skin usually keeps water out, it lets small oil particles in. Once past the top layer, they reach the deeper skin layer where tiny blood vessels are. From there, the essential oils enter your bloodstream and travel around your body, so you benefit inside and out.
How to Use Roller Blends
Using roller blends is simple and convenient, perfect for busy days or when you need a quick boost.
Apply to pulse points: Roll onto wrists, behind your ears, neck, or chest. These spots help the oils absorb and diffuse their scent naturally.
Use as needed: You can apply a few times a day whenever you want to feel calmer, more focused, or uplifted.
Inhale deeply: After applying, also roll some into the palms of your hands and rub together - take a few deep breaths to soak in the aroma and benefits.
Avoid sensitive areas: Don’t apply near your eyes or broken skin, do not use citrus oils if you are going to be going out in the sun with your skin exposed.
Carry it with you: Keep your roller blend in your bag or at your desk so it’s always handy for a quick reset.
Roller blends make it easy to bring the power of essential oils into your day without fuss or mess.
Roller bottles are a must-have whether you’re an essential oil pro or just starting out.
Roller Blends FAQ
Q: How do I know how many drops of essential oil to add?
A: For a 10ml roller bottle, a safe dilution is usually 15-20 drops total of essential oil(s). That’s about 1.5-2%. For kids or sensitive skin, use fewer drops. Stick to this and you’ll avoid irritation.
Q: Can I mix any essential oils together?
A: Most oils play nicely, but some need caution. For example, citrus oils like bergamot or lemon can cause photosensitivity - avoid applying those blends before sun exposure. If you’re unsure, start simple or check trusted sources. But other than that go with oils you love first then experiment as your essential oil collection grows.
Q: What’s the best place to apply roller blends?
A: Common spots are wrists, behind the ears, neck, chest, or the soles of your feet. These areas absorb well and are easy to reach when you need a quick scent hit.
Q: Can I use roller blends during pregnancy?
A: Some oils aren’t recommended during pregnancy, so always check safety guidelines or chat with a health professional. When in doubt, keep blends gentle and simple.
Q: How long will my roller blend last?
A: Most roller blends last around 6-12 months if stored in a cool, dark place. Carrier oils can go rancid, so watch for any off smells or changes in colour.
Q: Do I need to patch test before using?
A: Yes! Always patch test new blends on a small skin area before regular use to check for any reaction.
Q: Can I use carrier oils other than the ones you mentioned?
A: Definitely! Just make sure they’re skin-safe, light, and don’t go rancid quickly. Fractionated coconut oil and jojoba are popular because they absorb well and have long shelf lives.
