I love using Essential Oils in the kitchen both for cooking and cleaning up after cooking! The oils seem to create such a comforting feeling, just like spices but I feel even deeper. I guess you are getting an aromatherapy hit as you are opening the bottle and adding the oils to your recipes. I love to add a drop or two citrus oil to my pots and pans dish water then adding a couple of drops onto my bench as I wipe that clean. I also love to add some lemon or grapefruit to a paper towel and wipe down the front of my microwave and oven as well, it gives them a nice shine!
Classic Gingerbread Cookies using Essential Oils
Ingredients:
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
- 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1/2 cup molasses
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 drop of ginger essential oil
- 1 drop of cinnamon bark essential oil
- 1 drop of clove essential oil
(When using essential oils in cooking drop onto a spoon first instead of straight into your recipe, you only want one drop - and choose doTerra essential oils which are safe to be taken internally)
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Dough:
- In a large bowl, cream the softened butter and brown sugar until smooth.
- Add the egg and molasses, mixing until well combined.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, and essential oils, ginger, clove and cinnamon bark.
2. Combine Ingredients:
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, mixing until the dough comes together. If the dough is too sticky, add a bit more flour, a tablespoon at a time.
3. Chill the Dough:
- Divide the dough in half, flatten each half into a disk, and wrap in plastic wrap.
- Refrigerate for at least 1 hour (or up to 2 days) to firm up. Chilling the dough helps the cookies hold their shape.
4. Preheat Oven and Roll Out Dough:
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1/4-inch thickness.
- Cut into shapes with cookie cutters, and place the shapes onto the prepared baking sheets about 1 inch apart.
5. Bake and Cool:
- Bake the cookies for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are set (do not overbake for softer cookies).
- Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
6. Decorate:
- Once cooled, decorate with icing, sprinkles, or candies as desired.
Royal Icing (optional):
- Ingredients:
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1-2 tablespoons milk or water (add more if needed for a smooth consistency)
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Instructions:
- Whisk the powdered sugar, milk/water, and vanilla until smooth. Adjust the consistency by adding more liquid or powdered sugar as needed.
Enjoy! 🤶🎄
